Itineraries

Costa Rica is larger than most people realize. Across the country we have many distinct attractions and destinations--volcanoes, rain forests, cloud forests, beach resorts, remote rainforest clad beaches, and more...

There are two major airports in Costa Rica: San Jose (SJO) and Liberia (LIR).

San Jose is in the center of the country, and a better choice for visiting the coastal areas of Manuel Antonio and the Osa peninsula, as well as the Caribbean coast. These tend to be lusher, more humid rainforest areas.

Liberia is in the northwest corner of the country, and better for the beaches of Guanacaste (Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, Playa Hermosa, etc), as well as the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. This is considered the driest region in Costa Rica. A trip in this area, combining the Rincon de la Vieja volcano area and a beach destination reduces travel/driving times. As pretty much everything is within an hour of the airport.

In broad terms, flying in/out of San Jose and visiting the other areas generally requires longer drives (3 hours to Arenal, 2.5 hours to Manuel Antonio, 2.5 hours to Monteverde), or commuter or charter flights in small aircraft.

The central mountain destinations like Monteverde, Arenal volcano are roughly equidistant from either airport.
